What is WebP — and why convert from JPG?

WebP is a modern image format from Google that compresses photos far more efficiently than JPG. At the same visible quality, a WebP file is usually 25–35% smaller than an optimised JPG, and often 60–75% smaller than an unoptimised JPG straight out of a camera or design tool. Those saved kilobytes add up to faster pages, lower bandwidth costs, and better Core Web Vitals scores.

JPG vs WebP: what actually changes?

JPG (also written JPEG) is brilliant for photographs, but its compression is over thirty years old. WebP reaches the same perceived quality using fewer bytes, and it can also store an alpha channel — so logos and graphics with transparency stay crisp, something JPG simply cannot do.

When should you convert JPG to WebP?

Convert to WebP whenever an image is shown online: product photos, blog images, hero banners, thumbnails and gallery pages all load noticeably faster as WebP. It is also a great way to shrink a large photo library before backing it up or sharing it.
